As announced late Wednesday night, former Iowa State and CFL star defensive lineman Cleyon Laing has signed a three-year, entry level contract with the Miami Dolphins.
Have the Miami Dolphins found Cameron Wake 2.0?
Laing, who previously worked out with the Patriots in December of last year, recently scheduled workouts with the Jets, Titans, Redskins, Chargers, Saints, and again with the Patriots before deciding Miami would his best fit, according to his agent Jonathon Hardaway.
According to nesn.com, Laing actually had a very productive pro day in 2013.
5.09-second 40-yard dash, 7.51-second 3-cone, 4.65-second short shuttle, 31.5-inch vertical, 9-foot, 6-inch broad jump.
In comparing these numbers to 95th overall picked Sam Montgomery’s (6-foot 3-inches, 260 lbs) 2013 NFL combine, you will see Cleyon Laing (6-foot-3 inches, 280 lbs) is actually quite athletic for his size.
4.81-second 40-yard dash, 7.18-second 3-cone, 4.51-second short shuttle, 34.50-inch vertical jump, 9-foot, 6-inch broad jump.
The 25-year old set career-highs with the Toronto Argonauts in 2015, recording 41 tackles, nine sacks, and two forced fumbles in 18 games. His impactful season for the Argonauts earned him a nomination for Top Canadian in the 2015 CFL Awards.
Though not much film is available, what I have seen on Laing shows he has a solid base, a strong inside presence, and knack for getting to the quarterback. The Argonaut recorded 15 sacks in 35 career games. Of note, Cleyon Laing was selected 9th overall in the 2012 CFL Draft.
