According to USA Today reporter Tom Pelissero, the Miami Dolphins have signed former Ivy League and AFL return man A.J. Cruz.
Cruz, who played defensive back at Brown University, was one of only 41 players in Ivy League history to be selected First Team All-Ivy three times, becoming just the 10th player in Brown University history to achieve the feat.
The defensive back turned receiver had a small stint in the NFL, signing with the Chicago Bears in 2015, but he was waived during camp. (Adam Gase was offensive coordinator in Chicago at that time).
Last year for the Arizona Rattlers, Cruz returned 51 kickoffs for 1,221 yards and six touchdowns. He also amassed 220 yards and five TDs receiving, and 46 yards and three three TDs at fullback. In addition, Cruz contributed on defense, compiling 45.5 tackles at linebacker.
No statement has been issued stating whether Cruz could be competing for Pro Bowl receiver Jarvis Landry’s job as returner, but it seems Adam Gase clearly saw something in the 25-year old receiver, giving him a second chance in Miami.
